Support requested by CAMSAR Feb 17th - 18th 2011

Thursday 17th

0830hrs the team went active after a request from Cambridge Search and Rescue (CAMSAR) to assist them with a search for a elderly female that had been reported missing by her family. Sally Middleton (82) went missing on Monday morning after catching a bus to Peterborough city centre.

YALSAR mobilised a team, which meet at Warrington police station Peterborough to assist in a joint search along with CAMSAR and MIDSHIRES. The search lasted all day with a number of searches conducted through the day in several areas of Peterborough but to no avail.

Friday 18th

YALSAR was requested to join CAMSAR in a new location for the missing 82 year old female as new information had come via the police through the night from studying CCTV footage. It was positively identified that the misper had been seen alighting from the 202 bus at Morton near Bourne in Lincolnshire.

YALSAR joined CAMSAR and MIDSHHIRES with the assistance of Cambridge Police. A full scale search of the surrounding area was conducted by all three teams and a body was discovered in the area. The body found at 12.15pm 18th February in a field in Morton village, near to Bourne still needs to be formally identified but the family believe it to be Mrs Middleton.

Our sincere thoughts and feelings are with the family of the deceased at this very upsetting time.

EMAS Call Out 30th Nov 2010

Tuesday 30th

EMAS assistance call for 2 vehicles and crew to work from Louth ambulance station. Bret, Marcus and Mike in Landrover 110 ambulance ( mobile 1) and Rob Fox , John Fox and Scottie to meet up at Louth in second vehicle.

We set off at 3 pm and battled what all I can say were some of the worst roads I have seen in a long while. M180 totally white over. we arrived at Louth some 3 hours later.
We were then tasked at 9:30 to meet with Gary the paramedic from the prev days shout to try and get through to Caistor to a 73 year old male that has had a fall in the snow and has a leg and ankle injurry. All roads to Caistor were closed due to conditions and no ambulance could get within 5 miles of the address. we set off over the Wolds to try and get through. the roads were at least a foot deep in snow with drifts to nearly 3 feet, visability was no more than 10 feet and the weather was certainly a blizzard, rocking and pushing the landrover side ways as we were moving forward.

Whilst on the top we came across a car that had gone into a ditch. We stopped to check it out and make sure there were no casualties onboard, all was fine , car was empty. reported to EMAS control. in the 2 mins we were there the snow had drifted up the wheels to the body work on the drivers side!

We set of and progressed very carefully and arrived at the callers address. The caller appeard to have suffered a broken ankle and the swelling was bad. A descision was taken to convey to Grimsby hospital. Mike Evens, Marcus, Gary the paramedic and Brett carried the patient to the 110 and we made are way to Grimsby. we handed over to A and E and returned to Louth for 1 am. quick coffee and then off for home. Driving conditions were terrible on the roads and with the wind and snow. 3 hours later we arrived back in doncaster for 4:30am.
Mileage 207 miles (doncaster louth caister grimsby louth bawtry doncaster)

Rob Fox and Scottie were tasked as we arrived at Louth at 6pm to assist a paramedic with a stroke patient near Brigg, they were to drive to Brigg to collect a paramedic and then convey to hospital. We did not see much of the other team but I can imagine that there driving conditions were as bad as what I have reported. they returned safely to louth AS and then returned home .
Mileage 280 (chesterfield louth brigg grimsby louth chesterfield)

I can confirm that all parties involved in these call outs so far have experience some hurrendouse weather and have most definatly made a difference to people lifes if not saved them. I can only comment on what had been said to us, but we were told that if it was not for us the patients with the broken hip would have had not choice but to have remained on the tiled floor in the conservatory/ kitchen till better weather in the morning which would have meant she would have been on the floor for roughly 17 hours, this is a massive and dangerouse ordeal for anyone to go through. let alone a 83 year old

Well done team.

Brett.

Incident 17 Jun 2010

We were travelling back from a meeting in the yalsar truck along the A45 in Warrickshire. We were just coming off the A45 onto the M69 when we noticed an elderly female cross the slip road and start to go down the embankment, it was obvious to the both of us that she was lost and something was wrong. It was not safe for us to park on the slip road. so we took the descision to drive around the round about onto the fly over to see where she was.As we got onto the flyover we saw the elderly femal fall down the steep embankment and fall into the hard shoulder and dangerously onto lane 1.

We both imeadeatly responded by quickly putting on our hi viz tabards and ran along the flyover and then climed down the embankment on the A45 ( which is basically a motorway) bowny had his first aid kit and went to the victim. I phoned the police on the 3 9's system whilst standing in lane 1 to usher the traffic into lane 2 to try and protct the casualty who was now moving around but obviously disoreantated. My concern was she would wonder into lane 1 and as she was still a good 100 yrds away , we would not have been able to stop her. We made contact with the casualty, bowny did a quick assesment, the lady had a large bruise to her face with a cut and a couple a grazes. We decided due to the nature of the location to take her back to safety up the slip road to our car and awaite the police and ambulance. We had to walk her back up the slip road, so i again acted as safety guy and stood some distance behind them in now lane 2 of the slip road to fend of the vehicles coming up at speed, once back at the car bowny started to treat the casualty and we awaited the prompt response from coventry and Warrickshire police and ambulance services. apparrently this junction falls on the county lines!

The lady did infact turn out to be a missing from home. When we were speaking to her she refeered to being from northern island but was trying to get back to her new house over the road. she had infact been in this country for some 30 plus years and at that time the A45 was not there, hence why she was trying to cross it lane by lane rather than use the bridge. The other noticable thing is the police are aware of here and she normally speaks with a coventry accent, but at times like these she goes back to an irish accent due to her state of mind and illness.

The lady turned out to be ok just with a few cuts and bruises, but could have been a whole lot worse if we had not been there at that time. It was a concerning thing to see that out of all the vehicles speeding down the road only 1 had stoped to try to assist!

But a good job all round
